In anticipation of the event launch of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” on May 27 on Disney+, here is everything we know about the brand new Star Wars series!
After The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, a third live-action Star Wars series is about to make its big debut on Friday May 27 on the Disney+ platform. Obi-Wan Kenobi, centered on the famous Jedi Knight, will see Scottish actor Ewan McGregor make a comeback in the title role, more than fifteen years after his last appearance in Revenge of the Sith.
WHAT IS THIS SERIES?
Originally, the Obi-Wan Kenobi project was developed for the cinema. Supposed to be directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot), the feature film never saw the light of day, however, due to the disappointing box office results of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story, which also led to the abandonment of the Boba Fett spin-off developed by Josh Trank.
The arrival of the Disney+ platform and the triumphant launch of The Mandalorian reshuffled the cards and breathed new life into the saga. The success of the very first live-action Star Wars series has brought spin-off projects back to the fore; the Boba Fett movie then became The Book of Boba Fett, while the Obi-Wan Kenobi feature eventually took the form of a miniseries.
Because it is as a single season of six episodes that this new story was designed. And if Ewan McGregor does not rule out the idea of appearing in other Star Wars series, it will be necessary for the moment to be satisfied with this limited format, constraint imposed by the animated series Star Wars Rebels and Episode IV A new hope, in which the Jedi appears aged.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?
Obi-Wan Kenobi is not a sequel to The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, as the series takes place decades earlier; more precisely its plot is located between the first two trilogies, and a few years before Rebels in which the Jedi appeared as an old man. Appearances of Djin Darin and Grogu are therefore to be excluded, but it is however not impossible to see Boba Fett there, as a young bounty hunter.
The main plot follows the continuity of Order 66 launched by Emperor Palpatine, aiming to exterminate all the Jedi he accuses of plotting against him. As we learned from the animated series The Clone Wars, an inhibitor chip present in each of the clone army soldiers allowed the Sith to be obeyed by all the troops of his galactic army. Only a handful of Jedi survived the purge, including Yoda, exiled to the planet Dagoba, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Refugee on Tatooine, the latter has set himself the ultimate mission of watching over Luke Skywalker, the son of his former padawan Anakin Skywalker who has become the dark lord Darth Vader. In his eyes, the young boy will be able to bring balance to the Force and become the Chosen One, provided he follows Jedi training. A decision contested by Luke’s uncle, Owen Lars.
In addition to the presence of Darth Vader, and that presumed of Palpatine, the series will welcome two villains of mark, well known to fans of Rebels; the Grand Inquisitor, former Jedi turned to the dark side, officiating as the right arm of the dark lord, accompanied by the Third Sister, equipped with a new type of lightsaber with a rotating hilt system.
WHO IS IT WITH?
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series couldn’t have happened without Ewan McGregor. After having had a difficult relationship with the prequel for several years, the Scottish actor gradually reconciled with the universe of the saga, while the three prequel films were rehabilitated by some of the fans. It was by declaring himself ready to take over the role of Kenobi during an interview that Ewan McGregor gave birth to the idea of a spin-off devoted to the character in the minds of the Lucasfilm teams.
Another iconic actor from the prelogy will also be back, as Darth Vader will once again be played by Hayden Christensen, more than fifteen years after his last appearance in the role in Revenge of the Sith. A return that follows a slump of several years, the Canadian actor having played only in low-budget productions and confidential releases over the past decade.
The Grand Inquisitor will be portrayed in the series by Rupert Friend, who takes over the role from Jason Isaacs, who lent him his voice in Star Wars: Rebels; the Third Sister will be played by Moses Ingram, recently revealed to the general public by the mini-series The Queen’s Game.
Finally, several actors from the prelogy will also return in secondary roles. This is particularly the case of Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) and Bonnie Piesse (Beru), Luke’s uncle and aunt. Also present in the credits of the series, Genevieve O’Reilly returns as Mon Mothma, a role she had already played in Revenge of the Sith and the spin-off Rogue One.
A season 2 ofObi-Wan Kenobi is not on the agenda. Nevertheless, spin-offs derived from this series could see the light of day, in order to explore the story of secondary characters in the plot, or villains like Darth Vader or the Grand Inquisitor.
Open to the idea of playing Kenobi again, Ewan McGregor will not however be able to appear in any Star Wars series, but only those which are located in the same time frame (after the Clone Wars), such as Andor for example. , the prequel to RogueOne expected by the end of the summer. Hayden Christensen will be in the cast of the Ahsoka series, probably via flashback scenes retracing the past of Anakin Skywalker and his Jedi padawan Ashoka Tano.
Among the other Star Wars series expected in the coming months, we can count on the third season of The Mandalorian, which will once again bring together Din Djarin and Grogu, or even The Acolyte, whose action will take place 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. .
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series, to be found exclusively on the Disney+ platform from May 27.
