Failed from Sciences Po, what alternatives?

The prestigious school on rue Saint-Guillaume delivered its verdict on Wednesday but for the disappointed, don’t panic, plans B remain accessible to study political science elsewhere.

For this 2022 edition, Sciences Po Paris has announced that it has received nearly 12,000 applications for its post-baccalaureate courses for between 1,100 and 1,200 places. The selectivity rate is thus 10%, which inevitably generates its share of left-outs. But if ever the institution has refused you, nothing is lost, you can opt for other courses offering similar opportunities. Le Figaro Student has listed these courses, available on Parcoursup or elsewhere.

■ Apply to an Institute of Political Studies (IEP)

The Institutes of Political Studies, nicknamed the “Sciences Po de Province”, constitute the most obvious alternative. Often presented as the little brothers of the Parisian school, they are slightly less selective because they are less recognized and have fewer budgets and partnerships. However, the content of the training remains relatively similar.

Access conditions : The application is made via Parcoursup. The “Sciences Po network” made up of the IEPs of Aix-en-Provence, Lille, Lyon, Rennes, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Strasbourg and Toulouse, as well as the IEP of Grenoble, organize a joint written competition, which amounts to a multiple wish. In Bordeaux, the procedure is similar to that of Sciences Po Paris with review of the file, to which must be added the sending of a marked copy as well as a 20-minute oral.

To know: if Sciences Po Paris recruits only in post-baccalaureate and master, the provincial IEPs offer more entry levels. Already, you can retake the competition in bac+1 to integrate the first year. Otherwise, to enter directly into the second year, after a bac+1, only the IEP of Aix-en-Provence and Lyon make this possible. In the third year, it is simply Sciences Po Bordeaux.

■ Move towards a preparatory class

Several preparatory categories offer disciplines close to the subjects taught at Sciences Po.

– You can opt for a IEP preparationin an attempt to pass the competition after a year of intensive revisions.

– For the more literary aspiring science tracks, the A/L preparation (classic letters) and B/L (humanities and social sciences) would be a good compromise. This will also allow you to apply for an IEP later on.

– Alternatively, you can turn to the major business schools with a ECG preparation.

– Finally, followers of the social sciences who hope to integrate an ENS can follow a prep D1 (law/management) or D2 (economics-management), which combines high school and university courses

Please note: after two years of preparation and one year of a bachelor’s degree, you can try your luck again at Sciences Po Paris, by applying for one of their master’s degrees. Otherwise, at Sciences Po Saint-Germain-en-Laye, you can complete an integrated preparatory year (API) after two years of CPGE to join the master’s degree.

  • Preparatory courses accessible on Parcoursup

Each sector mentioned is accessible on Parcoursup, with many choices of establishments in ECG and A/L, the best known. According to the classification Le Figaro , Daniélou, Sainte-Geneviève and Henri IV represent the top three in terms of ECG preparation class. For A/L, Henri IV, Louis le Grand and Fustel de Coulanges in Strasbourg climbed to the top of the list.

There are fewer options for IEP preparation: only about twenty high schools and a few faculties, in Nancy or Lille for example. The same for the B/L, whose most famous classes are at Janson de Sailly, Henri IV or at the Parc in Lyon, according to the classification of the Figaro . Finally, as for the D1 or D2, some twenty establishments offer it. Among them stands out the ENC Bessières in Paris.

  • Preparations available outside Parcoursup

Rest assured, if you missed Parcoursup, you can find your happiness elsewhere than on the orientation platform. To do this, look for private prepas outside the contract, the best known of which are IpeSup and Intégrale. Often expensive, pay attention to the reputation of each one, however, because some can turn out to be “money boxes” and use the “double-brand” system in particular to display excellent results. The method is simple: at the end of the first year, students with average grades are presented for the competition under the label of the so-called secondary establishment, which belongs to the same group but allows not to tarnish the success of the historic brand. while continuing to collect the school fees of the young people.

■ Apply internationally

Many institutions abroad offer subjects equivalent to those of the Parisian school, in particular through their multidisciplinarity. Think for example of McGill in Montreal in Canada, the London School of Economics and Political science in the United Kingdom or Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Other options: Bocconi University in Italy or University Colleges in the Netherlands. However, keep to the application deadlines, which most often arrive early in the school year. But for Ucas, the site which centralizes admissions to British faculties, for example, there is an additional procedure, the sweeper car for latecomers, which is called “Clearing” and runs from July 5 to October 19, 2022. Students who have not yet been admitted can be selected for courses with places still available.

Terms of Access: The documents to be sent differ according to the establishments concerned, but they most often require an English test, the TOEFL or IELTS, but also letters of motivation and recommendation, all translated into the language of Shakespeare.
