Eurobois Awards: innovation at the service of the wood industry

The Eurobois fair, which will open its doors from June 14 to 17 at Lyon Eurexpo, will be an important business meeting and exchange for all players in the wood industry, including manufacturers, furniture designers and fitters. For exhibitors, equipment manufacturers or suppliers of technologies for wood, it will also be a major innovation event, with the highlighting of the 28 finalist concepts of a renewed Eurobois Awards competition, and the awarding of prizes to the winners on the show on Wednesday, June 15.

With more than 400 exhibitors, both suppliers of materials and products for furniture and fittings, and manufacturers of machines and technologies for woodworking, and nearly 30,000 visitors expected, Eurobois 2022 is indeed the big event. biennial of the entire wood industry in France, and presents itself in the best of ways. Given its renewable nature, this material is indeed destined for a bright future, both for construction and for interior fittings. But it is also a sector in motion: to be relevant, the implementation of wooden fittings must constantly evolve through innovation, to offer more comfort, more versatility, more aesthetics, more sustainability… It is to fulfill its role as a showcase for innovation that Eurobois has decided to give a new dimension to the Eurobois Awards this year, which will be a highlight of this 2022 edition.

More visibility for innovation

To achieve this, the organizer has taken the initiative to simplify the process of participation in this innovation competition, by opening it up to all exhibitors, and by offering the selected products increased visibility both upstream, during the show, and at the same time on the event’s website, on social networks and on the Eurobois Connect application. As with each edition, a jury made up of experts from the sector has been formed, chaired by Arnaud Godevin, director of the École Supérieure du Bois (ESB), with a novelty this year: the creation of a student jury – made up of young people training in architecture, carpentry, layout or engineering – which will award a specific prize, the “Student favorite”. At the end of the selections, the jury retained a total of 28 innovations, representative of the whole offer of the show, of which we give in turn our selection in the furniture, fittings and woodworking sectors (see boxes ), and which will benefit from signage that will showcase them at the show*. Another novelty of these Eurobois Awards, the selected companies will be able to present their innovation on the TV set of the show on Tuesday June 14 from 10 am. As is tradition, the award ceremony will take place at the end of the day on June 15.

Materials: decoration and durability

In terms of materials, the jury chose Paperstone, a unique composite material made from recycled FSC®-certified paper and cardboard, and impregnated with a resin called Petrofree.TM. As its name suggests, this biological resin does not contain any chemical derivatives derived from petroleum, and it releases no VOCs. Developed by Paneltech, an American company based near Seattle, and distributed in France by Aska Interior (exclusively nationally), this material has high qualities of resistance to shocks, scratches and water, and can be worked such as solid wood with applications in facades and worktops, in kitchens, bathrooms, reception desks, etc. Another contender for a Eurobois Award is the Crystal collection by Rehau, which offers polymer-based products that create a glass effect with a variety of colours. Rauvisio crystal surface panels, Raukantex edgebanding and Rauvolet crystal-line cabinet curtain systems can be combined to create unique design arrangements.

Fittings: combining ergonomics and aesthetics

In the field of furniture and fittings fittings, the jury selected the Exedra 2 double pocket door system from Salice, which allows the simultaneous opening of two joined doors, thanks to an innovative movement solution. This solution does not require load-bearing front profiles either on the top panel or on the bottom panel of the cabinet, thus eliminating any need for additional reinforcements of the box. Thanks to the quality of movement, the opening and closing of the doors can be done effortlessly and with one hand, offering a functional and suitable solution in many environments such as kitchens, dressing rooms, teleworking spaces or simple storage applications. Also candidates for a Eurobois Award, the new Merivibox drawer platform by Blum, and the AvanTech You drawer with lighting signature by Hettich.

Technologies for wood: for optimized machining

Innovation will also be present in the sector of woodworking technologies. Among the candidates for a Eurobois Award are several intelligent solutions developed by the Weinig group, positioned in the industrialization of solid wood. These include the Safedetect concept, a contactless system that stops the machine if the operator is near a dangerous area, an exclusive LED solution for positioning the panel reception suction cups on the machines, and of the Opticore AI system, which uses artificial intelligence to scan and then analyze the defects of the wooden panels to deduce the best cutting plan. Several technologies from the Italian manufacturer SCM Group are also included in the selection, led by the new Stefani X industrial edgebander, a model thought out down to the smallest detail, from the structure of the machine to the digital and electronic control systems, operator groups with servo-assisted movement, up to new generation gluing devices for an even faster and more efficient glue change, resulting in a configurable and customizable machine for excellent machining quality.
