Coronavirus: what are the epidemic centers in the world

The coronavirus today in the world:

About 514 million e people infected

More 6.24 million death

Africa

On the African continent, the drop in epidemiological indicators of Covid, which had lasted for several months, seems to be starting to reverse in South Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) does not mask its concern and the Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI, based in South Africa), already talking about the arrival of a fifth wave in the country. According to experts, the rebound currently observed would be linked to the arrival new Omicron variants: BA.4 and BA.5 and the fact that the winter season is starting on the continent.

In South Africa, Covid-19 cases are therefore on the rise, but hospital admissions remain stable. Some additional deaths are reported, but not in alarming proportions. In addition, the Aspen plant (Aspen Pharmacare is a South African pharmaceutical company) which had obtained authorization to market Johnson & Johnson’s Covid vaccine under its name, may have to stop manufacturing it, for lack of orders… At the beginning of this week, the mozambique (where the incidence rate is still falling), has reinforced the health protocol against Covid-19 at its main border crossing points with South Africa, due to the recent increase in infections in the neighboring country. Health teams are in place to verify Covid test results and ensure compliance with preventive measures. the Botswanathe Zambia and Angola are not reporting an increase in pandemic numbers and are trying to expand their vaccination coverage. A very slight increase is detected in Namibiain Eswatini as well as at Zimbabwebut these variations remain weak and do not arouse any concern for the moment.

Facing Mozambique, in the Indian Ocean, the epidemic continues to decline Madagascar and at the Meeting. In Reunion, cases of people infected with subvariants of Omicron have been identified this week, but it seems that these “recombinants“ do not create more severe forms of the disease. To Mauritius the circulation of the virus has slowed markedly, but the social crisis is worsening and demonstrations have taken place on the island following the announcement of the rise in gas and fuel prices.

The ebb of the Covid epidemic continues at Kenyain Somaliain Ethiopia as well as at Sudanin Egypt and at South Sudan. In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), despite the lull observed for several weeks in terms of the Coronavirus, the country’s health authorities fear an outbreak of new infections in the coming weeks, and various strategies are being implemented to increase the rate of vaccination. According to the WHO, several diseases have recently been spreading in the DRC: measles, cholera and recently cases of Ebola have appeared. In the region, this haemorrhagic fever virus also threatens (in addition to RCD), the Central African Republic and Angola.

The Covid is receding and appears as a lesser evil to the Cameroonwhich is struggling with an epidemic of cholera, while the Chad, which has been little affected by the pandemic (according to official figures), is facing an epidemic of yellow fever. The number of listed Covid cases decreases in Nigerto Nigeria and the figures remain stable at mali.

No West African country has yet declared a resumption of circulation of the Covid-19 virus. The Ivory Coast announces a few additional cases compared to the weeks which have just passed, but the figures are at their lowest. Various conflicts, childhood and tropical diseases, economic consequences of the Ukrainian crisis and post-Covid recovery, remain much bigger concerns than the coronavirus pandemic for people in Africa.

The circulation of the virus continues to weaken in Algeriain Tunisia and at Morocco. Restrictive measures are relaxed and tourism is gradually resuming.

  • the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention regularly updates available information regarding the coronavirus pandemic in Africa,
  • and site publications “Our World in Data”led by the University of Oxford and written by Max Roser (social historian and development economist) provide indications on the rate of vaccination by continent, then by country.

Americas

The health situation is stable at Canada, with disparities according to the Provinces. In Quebec, wearing a mask will no longer be mandatory in most public places as of May 14. It will remain compulsory in public transport, in health establishments as well as for infected people. The measures in force, which differ according to the provinces, are detailed on the Canadian government website

A weak epidemic rebound is currently observed in UNITED STATES (especially in the Northeast region). Despite all the White House health adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci believes the coronavirus pandemic will soon be “under control and endemic” in the country. Experts will meet in mid-June to find out if vaccination, with serums adapted from the Pfizer and Moderna laboratories against Covid-19, is possible for babies from 6 months old. More precise information, by State, on the Covid-19 in the USA, on the site “Johns Hopkins, University & Medicine

A resurgence of the epidemic without great gravity is visible in certain countries of Central America: Honduras (where more than 200,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s anti-Covid vaccine that have not found takers will be destroyed), at Costa ricanas well as at Panama. These increases are undoubtedly due to the relaxation of preventive measures and the return to more “normal” activity.

In the Caribbean region, the virus is also circulating somewhat more actively. The number of cases increases to Porto Ricoat Trinidad and Tobagobut also in Martiniquein Dominicain Jamaica etc These increases in infections are also certainly induced by the resumption of tourist activity.

In South America, incidence rates across countries remain relatively stable. The indicators are starting to rise again slightly Brazila recovery no doubt due to the various Carnivals and especially that of Rio, but for the moment, without any real consequence on hospitalizations and deaths. The CNRS in South America has classified detailed information on the situation related to the Coronavirus in this region of the world

Asia

In India and at Nepal, Covid pandemic numbers remain low and roughly flat. In China, the “zero Covid” strategy and the data concerning the epidemic are increasingly disputed, but the information is not verifiable. If the vice is loosening a little on the city of Shanghai, confined for more than a month, it is now Beijing which fears to suffer the same fate. Many shops and public places have been closed in the capital and a massive screening campaign has begun to define the extent of contamination. The results of this campaign will determine the decision of the Chinese authorities.

The epidemic curves of the coronavirus are still falling in the Bangladeshi Thus than at myanmar (Burma). At Laos, the health situation is improving, the country has reopened its borders, but with precautions (negative test and quarantine are still imposed on arrival). At Vietnam and at Cambodia the epidemic finally seems under control, and the number of Covid cases listed in Thailand show a marked decrease. Since May 1, Thailand has relaxed the conditions for entering its territory. The screening test on arrival has been abolished for all travellers, vaccinated or not. However, unvaccinated people must still provide a negative test before departure. No need to do a test on the fifth day either. On the other hand, travelers must continue to register on the Thailand Pass website and take out special Covid-19 medical insurance.

The indicators are also down in Malaysia. Since May 1, the Covid test for fully vaccinated travelers entering the country is no longer mandatory and wearing a mask outdoors becomes optional (but recommended). To Singapore the incidence rate is decreasing and restrictions have been eased. In Indonesia to Brunei Darussalam and to Philippinesthe figures linked to Covid-19 are at an all-time low.

Taiwan is at its peak of contamination. However, the authorities of the Island confirmed the abandonment of the “zero Covid” strategy and reaffirmed that no confinement as rigorous as in China would be imposed. In South Korea, the epidemic is receding and the obligation to wear a mask outdoors has not been in force since May 2. At Japanthe epidemic continues to decline slowly, but steadily and sustainably.

In Central Asiato Middle East and at Middle Eastno country declares a resumption of the coronavirus epidemic.

Europe

In Europe, the epidemic continues to ebb. In Swiss, the positive evolution of the epidemiological situation has led to the cancellation of the last health restrictions in force at the borders for travelers from abroad. It is no longer necessary to present a vaccination certificate or a cure certificate when entering the country. In Greece also, from May 1 and until August 31, 2022, travelers are no longer required to present either a digital Covid certificate, or a recovery certificate or test, to enter Greek territory. In France, the number of cases of contamination is falling, as well as that of hospitalizations. For more detailed information on the measures implemented in European countries, the website wholeeurope.eu regularly reviews each country in the Union.

Oceania

In Australia, the virus is still circulating, but deaths remain low. Three new sub-variants of Omicron, named BA2.12.1, BA4 and BA5, have been detected in the country.

In New Zealand, the Covid-19 figures are stagnating on an average plateau. Some border closure restrictions imposed when the country was applying the “zero Covid” strategy were deemed illegal because they were too severe, did not take into account certain specific cases and deprived New Zealand citizens the right to return home during the pandemic.
