The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) organized the MECA from March 21 to 30, 2022 in Vietnam and Cambodia, with three stages: Ho Chi Minh City (March 21-23), Hanoi (March 24-26) and Phnom Penh (March 28-30). This mission was led by the Secretary General of La Francophonie, Louise Mushikiwabo, and made up of around a hundred French-speaking economic and institutional operators from Africa, North America, Western Europe and the Indian Ocean. .
This very first economic and trade mission with a multilateral dimension of the OIF intended to provide its member states and governments, the host countries in the first place, with strong and concrete support for cooperation for a resilient and sustainable economic recovery after the pandemic. world of COVID-19.
Aware of the importance of this large-scale event for the Francophone community, The Courier of Vietnam – the only French-language newspaper in Vietnam – cooperated closely with the Asia-Pacific Regional Representation (PERPA) of the OIF, based in Hanoi, its long-time partner, in order to ensure media coverage of the MECA, the visit of the Secretary General and activities to celebrate the International Day
of La Francophonie 2022 in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
“This mission was very important for all parties – the OIF, the REPAP and the CVN – especially since it was the first external activity of the French-speaking community to take place in Vietnam after two years of rupture due to the ‘epidemic“, estimated the editor-in-chief of the Vietnam courierNguyen Hong Nga.

The CVN editorial team has decided to relay the event on its three journalistic media, namely: the online newspaper (https://lecourrier.vn/), the weekly magazine (64 pages in color) and the television program ” Espace francophone” (weekly 15-minute show, rebroadcast twice a week).
Media operations were carried out in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, where all MECA activities and other events in honor of the International Day of La Francophonie were held. From March 21 to 23, visits to local businesses took place in Ho Chi Minh City, business meetings in “Business to Business” (B2B) format and above all the Francophone Business Forum with simultaneous thematic workshops on in three targeted sectors: agro-industry, sustainable energies, as well as digital goods and services.
“For such an international level event, the volume of information provided was very large. So, it was important to select targeted information and relevant thematic sessions for our articles“, underlined Dào Quang Châu, deputy head of the Representative Office of the Vietnam courier in Ho Chi Minh City. Because of the modest number of the latter, Mr. Châu had to calculate well before undertaking the distribution of tasks to each according to their skills, while constantly consulting the management of the newspaper in Hanoi.
In the capital, similar activities took place from March 24 to 26 as in the southern megalopolis, culminating in the Vietnam-Francophonie High-Level Economic Forum and the official ceremony in honor of the International Day of the Francophone.
At the two forums in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, hundreds of magazines from Vietnam courier were also offered to participants. A good opportunity to widely present the only French-language newspaper in Vietnam to international guests. “French-speaking delegates from African countries were particularly interested in the Economy section of our weekly newspaper because they can find information there on agro-industry, a sector in which they seek to establish cooperation with Vietnamese partners.“, insisted Bùi Thi Phuong, deputy head of the Service of the magazine.I even have souvenir photos with delegates, all with Le Courrier du Vietnam in hand“, she said with a smile.
“I covered the official celebration of the International Day of La Francophonie. It left me with great impressions because on this occasion, Francophones from different countries celebrated together, with pride, for the influence of the Francophone community. In particular, the ceremony this year welcomed the Secretary General of La Francophonie. I wrote my article with all these emotions“, expressed Lê Phan Quê Anh.
Information on MECA’s activities in Vietnam was not only published on the Courrier du Vietnam online newspaper and magazine, but also featured in its television program “Espace francophone”. In the North, the CVN television team accompanied a delegation made up of representatives of a dozen French-speaking companies from Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali and Rwanda, for their visit to An Phat Holdings group, located in Hai Duong province. It was the first time that journalists were in direct contact with a large French-speaking African delegation.
“In order to properly accomplish this mission, in addition to researching information on each participating French-speaking African company and the local society, we had to acquire the necessary equipment. Determining that the field visit was quick, it was necessary to draw up an adequate scenario to film the working process of the delegation well and to interview enough people in the service of our television report.“, shared Vu Thi Phuong Mai, head of the television team.

“The first Economic and Trade Mission of La Francophonie in Vietnam has obtained initial concrete and encouraging results“, informed the Vietnam courier Henri Monceau, Director of the Economic and Digital Francophonie Department of the OIF.
Indeed, these achievements are linked to the large deployment of forces, from French-speaking economic and institutional operators to organizers in Vietnam, from the OIF Office in Paris to its Asia-Pacific Regional Representation (PERPA) located in Hanoi, and also to the media coverage of the press, including The Courier of Vietnam – under the Vietnamese News Agency.
“We are very satisfied with the cooperation with the Courrier du Vietnam, a long-standing partner of the Regional Representation, on the occasion of the MECA“, welcomed a representative of REPAP. And to continue that the media coverage of the event in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi was very well provided on three CVN media as well as on other publication products. of the Vietnamese News Agency to which this French-language newspaper reports. “Thus, the English-speaking and Vietnamese-speaking public was able to follow in real time the rich program of the MECA and the exchanges between the participating Vietnamese and international French-speaking companies.“, she estimated.
“The promotion of MECA in Vietnam to the general public has contributed to the establishment of partnerships between foreign French-speaking companies and local companies. It was also a question of promoting the cooperation between Vietnam and the OIF and confirming the interest that the latter gives to the country, which is located in one of the most dynamic regions in the world.“, judged the editor-in-chief of the Vietnam courierNguyen Hong Nga.
His deputy, Doàn Thi Y Vi, added: “This has also made it possible to strengthen the French-speaking space in the country as well as to affirm its commitment to always work for the development of La Francophonie.“.
The editorial secretary Nguyên Thi Kim Chung, for her part, underlined the added value of this partnership. “This event helped to intensify the collaboration between the OIF and the CVN and Vietnam in general within the framework of La Francophonie, for the development and influence of the latter in the region and in the world. The media coverage of the MECA by Le Courrier du Vietnam has also promoted the role of the OIF and the only French-language newspaper in Vietnam within the regional and international French-speaking community.“, she concluded.
