Synopsis

Prohibited for children under 12

Through the story of an American family, this film tries to explain the origin of racism and extremism in the United States. It tells the story of Derek who, wanting to avenge the death of his father, shot by a black drug dealer, espoused the racist theses of a small group of far-right activists and put himself at the service of its leader, brutal theorist advocating the supremacy of the white race. These theories will lead him to commit a double murder dragging his younger brother, Danny, into the spiral of hatred.

Derek and Danny are two brothers in the heart of an America plagued by racism. The first wears a swastika on his chest, he is violent, tortured and ready to do anything to drown his anger. The second is the archetype of the young loser, who follows the model of his older brother to give meaning to his life. In line with 1984 by George Orwell or A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick, American History X leads a reflection on …

Can an ordinary individual with neo-Nazi ideologies advocating the supremacy of the white race become a good person? The answer is yes, and Edward Norton proves it in all its glory! Alongside his brother Danny, he plays the role of Derek who will find himself confronted with his own ideals by sympathizing with an African-American. I can’t find the words to describe my state of mind at the release of this film. Moved, upset, admiring in front of such an achievement, and above all marked. Dealing with such a hard subject in such a brutal way was really heartbreaking. Even suicidal. But the film manages to slap us both emotionally and artistically, thanks to its very well constructed script, its truly stunning direction and the acting…

This film is a masterpiece, so moving what is denounced there is real in this deep America. It’s a film that we could show in high schools in my opinion, but we should however ignore the violence that is illustrated in this film. Edward Norton plays his best role here, so captivating in his acting he manages to embark us on the story of a “normal” man, because yes at the beginning…
