FOOTBALL – What do the rapper Casey, the leader of rebellious France Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the author Virginie Despentes, the former minister Marie-George Buffet and the ecologist mayor of Grenoble Éric Piolle have in common? This Friday, May 13, all sign a text published in The world rejecting the takeover of Red Star FC, an emblematic club of French football based in Saint-Ouen, in Seine-Saint-Denis, by an American investment fund, 777 Partners.

A column published on the initiative of supporters of the “red star”, in particular the Red Star Bauer Collective (which works to ensure that the club continues to evolve, as it has for more than 110 years, in its historic stadium) and the Red Star Fans, the group of active supporters.

Fans of popular football and a club rooted in their city and department, who place themselves in opposition to the business billionaire clubs vying for the Champions League by spending crazy sums. “However, this space out of time is threatened by the takeover of the club by the American investment fund 777 Partners”, can we read in the text.

French football victim of “financial predators”

Because in a few weeks, the producer Patrice Haddad, now ex-owner of Red Star, completed the sale to an actor whose values are difficult to reconcile with those of the supporters and the dozens of artistic and political personalities who support them. An investment fund that makes a series of acquisitions (Vasco da Gama in Brazil, Standard de Liège in Belgium, Genoa in Italy) at far higher prices than the market, without this being followed by a tangible project or sporting success.

What to stir up the concern of the signatories of the petition of this May 13. “French football has become a new El Dorado for these financial predators”, we can read. A hollow reference to the tragic fate of Bordeaux and Nancy – to name a few -, French football institutions acquired by the same kind of actor and today on the verge of sinking (the Girondins are last in Ligue 1, and ASNL has already been relegated to National).

“The construction of affiliated clubs is establishing itself in the four corners of the globe as the new fashionable economic model making it possible to loot training centers, to speculate, to multiply transfers and opaque transactions between franchised clubs”, thus develops the published forum. in The world. And to deplore that the actors of French football, like the political decision-makers, turn a blind eye to this process underway all over the world, but where the Paris region, the first breeding ground for professional players in the world with Brazil, is particularly targeted.

Charges to which Patrice Haddad, who will remain in office as president despite the sale, responded in the columns of The Team. “This is not a cold fund that seeks a return on investment in the short term,” he assured Wednesday, when the realization of the sale was announced. Before adding that 777 Partners “perceived from the start our particular dimension, on this territory (…) How to protect popular football, if not with means? How to keep places at 10 euros? It is financed, all that.”

“For us, the Red Star is a common good that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of profit”, however concludes the forum of supporters and their supporters, far from agreeing with Patrice Haddad. “We call on all Red Star supporters and football lovers across the country to block the sale and mobilize to make this fight a national fight against football business and defend another vision of football.”
